I have often discussed how I want my daughter to be a voice for those who don't have one. I am hoping the seeds my wife and I are planting will provide her the tools to do so. When I saw Emma Watson's recent speech at the United Nations, I immediately thought that she is an ideal role model for my daughter.
Her portrayal of the heroic Hermione Granger has already made her an icon, but her work with the United Nations has made her even more impressive. Her speech focused on the still unfortunate gender inequalities that exist all over the globe. Watson is a voice for many and her words were personal, thoughtful, and accurate.
She is looking for support for a new U.N. campaign called HeForShe. "HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity." I look forward to learning more details about the campaign and how I can best help. But let me be clear . . .
I am supporting #heforshe because of my daughter and my wife.
I am supporting #heforshe because it was how I was raised by my mother.
I am supporting #heforshe for all the girls I have coached and taught in my two decades in education.
I am supporting #heforshe for my fellow at home fathers who also deal with gender inequality.
I am supporting #heforshe simply because it is the right thing to do.
I hope you will join me. http://www.heforshe.org
