Serena Williams is the G.O.A.T. End of discussion. (For those of you unfamiliar with that acronym, it means Greatest Of All Time.) I still remember hearing the rumors about these gifted sisters from Compton who were going to shock the world. And did they ever. I've been fans of Venus and Serena since they turned pro. I still remember seeing Serena play mixed doubles on a U.S. Open side court when she was just known as the younger sister of Venus Williams. Now Venus is perceived as Serena's older sister, with so many forgetting her seven Grand Slam singles titles.
I know the sisters have endured their fair share of hardships being who they are in a sport that still lacks diversity. They've said as much. It really disappoints me that Serena has not been supported and respected by American fans in the way so many of her peers have.
As much as I love their story, it has been so fun to watch them play all these years. It's pretty remarkable what they've been able to accomplish. As impressive as Venus has been in her career, much like her father predicted, Serena has become arguably one of the greatest athletes of all time. What she is currently doing is beyond comprehension. Professional tennis players are usually done, past their peak before they reach their 30's. But, not Serena. Her work ethic, especially as a 34 year old professional athlete, is something to admire. Good luck to Serena Williams as she attempts the calendar year Grand Slam!
